On the women’s side, Chris Evert-Lloyd, the second seed and favorite now that top-seeded Martina Navratilova is out of the tournament with a back ailment, advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-6, 6-1, 6- 2 win over Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia.
Evert-Lloyd said she’s learned to expect a .tough match from Mandlikova. “It’s nice to know the last two times I’ve played her, she’s taken me to the ropes, but I’ve pulled out of it.” “Mentally, she has to get a little tougher.”

It appeared to be the most difficult match of the week for Chris, who won the tournament, beating on her way Pam Shriver and Virginia Ruzici in straight sets.
